Bawku Central Member of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has made a formal request to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, seeking clarification on several financial matters.
Acting on behalf of the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Ayariga is demanding explanations for the significant losses reported in the Bank of Ghana’s financial statements for 2022 and 2023. The combined losses amount to approximately GHS 70 billion, which has raised concerns among the minority in parliament. Ayariga’s request also seeks an update on the expenses related to the controversial head office building project, which has seen escalating costs.
The former Information Minister has requested detailed particulars on the status of the write-offs made regarding the government’s indebtedness to the Bank of Ghana. He has also asked for reasons behind the massive losses reported in the Bank of Ghana’s financial statements for the two years.
Ayariga’s request was made in accordance with the RTI Act, which stipulates a seven-day period for the BoG to fulfill his demands. The request is seen as a move by the minority to hold the government and its institutions accountable for their financial dealings.
The Bank of Ghana is expected to provide detailed information on the matters raised by Ayariga, which will likely shed light on the financial management of the bank. The outcome of this request could have significant implications for the government and the Bank of Ghana, as it may lead to increased scrutiny and calls for accountability.
