Torrential Downpour Wreaks Havoc in Darkuman Accra, Damages Vehicles and Claims Life

A heavy downpour in Accra on Sunday, June 2, caused significant disruptions and damage. The torrential rainfall, which began early in the morning and continued into the afternoon, led to weakened trees toppling over and landing on parked vehicles.

In Darkuman, three vehicles were badly damaged when trees fell on them. A video posted on X showed a Toyota car severely damaged from the impact of an uprooted tree. An eyewitness narrated how the incident happened and pointed out two more similar tragedies on the same stretch in Darkuman.

Fortunately, there were no casualties reported in the Darkuman incidents. However, in a separate incident, a man was found dead on the Accra-Tema motorway after his car was swept away by floodwaters. The vehicle had been washed away by floodwaters near a bridge during a heavy downpour on Saturday, but the car and the driver’s body were only discovered on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), police, National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), and bystanders worked together to retrieve the vehicle. Nana-Mintah Nanor, the second-in-command at the Tema Motorway Fire Station, provided details of the incident to Joy News. He explained that the GNFS was notified around midday on Tuesday, several days after the flood occurred.

Nanor recounted that a dispatch rider, who witnessed the incident, rushed to the station and informed them about the car being washed away by floodwaters into the drain of the bridge, less than 100 meters from Nutrifoods. The rider had initially tried to rescue the driver but was unsuccessful and subsequently informed the police. Despite rescue efforts, the car could not be located in the water.
