Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for a broadened road toll system to fund the development of Ghana’s road infrastructure. While touring the Volta Region, Dr. Bawumia suggested that a broadened reintroduction of the tolling regime would provide the needed revenue for infrastructure development.
This comes after Ghana abolished road tolls in 2022 to ease traffic congestion on major roads. Dr. Bawumia made this statement while responding to citizen concerns over the bad nature of roads at a meeting with the clergy in the Volta Region.
He emphasized that the Government lacks the funding to undertake infrastructure development and needs innovative means like road tolling to provide a way out. Dr. Bawumia believes that the private sector can augment revenue from road tolls to provide the needed relief.
He stated that the Government’s approach to road funding should be reconsidered, and that the private sector can provide a lease payment option to help provide the needed infrastructure. Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for Ghana when elected president, including expanding agriculture, ensuring power sufficiency, and reforming the nation’s tax regime.
He also stressed the need to formally recognize the church for its role in national development and pledged to provide the needed support. The Vice President’s call for a broadened road toll system has sparked interest in the nation’s infrastructure development and funding strategies.
