Zambia’s former First Lady, Esther Lungu, and her daughter, Chiyeso Katete, have been arrested alongside another relative, Charles Phiri, on suspicion of possessing properties believed to be proceeds of crime.
The arrests were made on Thursday in Lusaka by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).
According to the DEC, Ms. Lungu failed to provide a reasonable explanation for acquiring a $30,000 estate in Lusaka.
The properties in question include 15 luxury flats and a high-cost house, among other assets.
The former President, Edgar Lungu, has stated that the family will challenge the charges in court, claiming the government is targeting him and his party members to prevent his return to politics.
The DEC has also summoned another of Ms. Lungu’s daughters, Tasila, to appear on related charges. The accused individuals have been released on bond and are expected to appear in court at a later date.
