Spanish Court Investigates Pique over Saudi Super Cup Deal

- Pique is under official investigation
- Pique's company would receive €40 million
- Pique retired in November 2022
Former footballer Gerard Pique is under official investigation by a Spanish court concerning the Spanish Super Cup’s relocation to Saudi Arabia.
Pique’s company, Kosmos, allegedly brokered the deal, raising concerns of potential corruption.
The Allegations
Judge Delia Rodrigo identified “possible criminal implications” in agreements between Kosmos and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Pique’s company would receive €40 million for facilitating the move, with the RFEF pocketing €400 million.
Pique’s Role
The 37-year-old Spaniard has consistently maintained the deal’s legality. However, leaked audio recordings involving Pique and former RFEF president Luis Rubiales sparked the investigation in 2022.
Wider Investigation
RFEF’s offices were raided, and Rubiales was arrested upon returning from a trip. He previously resigned for unrelated reasons and faces a separate sexual assault trial. RFEF’s current president, Pedro Rocha, is also under investigation regarding the Saudi deal.
The Super Cup and Pique’s Playing Career
The Spanish Super Cup was held in Saudi Arabia in 2020 and 2022. Pique, who retired in November 2022, participated in both tournaments with Barcelona.
