A lawmaker in India, Prajwal Revanna, has been arrested upon his return from Germany to Bengaluru, India, after being accused of sexual abuse by several women.
Revanna, a member of the Janata Dal (Secular) party, had fled the country on April 27. He has denied all allegations against him.
The 33-year-old MP is seeking re-election from the Hassan constituency in Karnataka.
However, shortly before voting, videos allegedly showing Revanna abusing women were circulated, sparking outrage. Revanna claimed the videos were doctored.
He is facing three cases of sexual assault and a special police team is investigating.
A court had issued an arrest warrant on May 18, and Revanna’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected on Thursday.
After being missing for several weeks, Revanna released a video on May 27, saying he would appear before the investigation team on Friday.
His grandfather, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, had asked him to return to India and face the investigation.
Revanna’s family members, including his father and uncle, are influential legislators in Karnataka, and his father is also facing sexual harassment allegations, which he denies.
