President Akufo-Addo Emphasizes Government’s Dedication to STEM Education Advancement

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his government’s dedication to advancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana.

Speaking at the third Applied Research Conference of Technical Universities in Ghana (ARCTUG 2024), the president emphasized the crucial role of STEM education in driving economic growth and societal progress.

He highlighted the vast opportunities arising from rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy, and stressed the need for a skilled and competent workforce to capitalize on these opportunities.

The president outlined various initiatives and investments aimed at promoting a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation, including the establishment of 20 STEM Centres and 10 model STEM senior high schools across the country.

He noted that seven of these schools are already operational, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories for teaching and learning in fields like artificial intelligence and robotics. The remaining three schools are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

In addition to new facilities, the government has prioritized the refurbishment and modernization of existing science laboratories.

The STEM Education Enhancement Programme, launched in 2019, has resulted in the construction of 186 new science laboratories across Ghana, equipped with modern technology to encourage hands-on learning and experimentation.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to innovation, citing the need for solutions from various disciplines to address challenges like climate change, public health crises, and sustainable development.

He also highlighted the government’s investment in STEM education, including over GH¢700 million allocated for research and book allowances since 2020, to foster a climate conducive to scholarly research and innovation.

The president urged all stakeholders to commit to strengthening partnerships and harnessing collective expertise to drive Ghana’s growth, emphasizing the potential for a brighter future characterized by innovation, inclusivity, and prosperity.
