The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the prompt resignation or dismissal of Godfred Dame Yeboah from his position as Minister of Justice and Attorney General, without any conditions attached.
This demand was voiced by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, during the “Moment of Truth” series held at the party headquarters on Tuesday, May 28th.
The call comes in the wake of accusations leveled against Mr. Dame by the third accused, Richard Jakpa, during a court session on Thursday, May 23rd. Jakpa expressed dissatisfaction with Dame’s alleged efforts to coerce him into incriminating the first accused, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in an ongoing ambulance procurement trial.
Nketia, addressing the media, played an audio recording purportedly featuring a conversation between the Attorney General and Richard Jakpa. The content of the tape, yet to be authenticated, allegedly shows Dame advising Jakpa to take medical leave until he returns home.
“Given the scandalous nature of this recording and other evidence we have presented, we make the following urgent demands to restore credibility to the Attorney-General’s office and Ghana’s judicial system,” said Asiedu Nketia.
Among the demands is the immediate resignation or dismissal of Godfred Dame for tarnishing the reputation of the Attorney General’s office and bringing it into disrepute.
Furthermore, the NDC seeks his disbarment and a disciplinary inquiry by the General Legal Council into Dame’s conduct as depicted in the recording.
“We also call for the swift prosecution of Godfred Dame for multiple breaches of Ghanaian law. If President Akufo-Addo fails to act, a future NDC administration will ensure his prosecution for fabricating evidence,” Nketia added.
Additionally, the party demands that the General Legal Council initiate disciplinary proceedings against Dame, leading to his disbarment for behavior unbecoming of a legal practitioner, particularly one entrusted with leadership within the Ghana Bar.
