John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has pledged to do away with perks like free fuel and non-essential benefits for government officials should he win the upcoming presidential election in December.
Addressing a gathering including the EU Ambassador to Ghana, the former President outlined a series of austerity measures his potential administration would enact, notably including the elimination of complimentary DSTV subscriptions, utility bill coverage, and fuel allowances for government personnel.
Mahama stressed that such privileges strain the nation’s finances and must be terminated. He advocated for government officials to shoulder the expenses of these services, aligning them with the financial responsibilities of ordinary citizens.
“We will cease the practice of footing utility bills, providing free fuel, and offering DSTV subscriptions as part of the perks for top government officials, directors, and the political elite. It is our belief that individuals in these positions should bear the costs of their electricity and water usage, just like any other Ghanaian citizen.”
He continued, “Unless individuals are utilizing a government vehicle or are on official government business, they should procure their own fuel for personal vehicles. Thus, we intend to put an end to this practice.”
