Contractors Push For Local Content Policy In Construction

- ABCECG advocates for a local content policy
- Their aim is to promote the use of local materials
- This will create a more sustainable and self-sufficient construction
The Association of Building and Civil Engineering Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG) is advocating for a local content policy and law specific to the construction industry.
Their aim is to promote the use of local materials and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
Prosper Yao Ledi, the Association’s National President, spoke at their 15th annual general meeting held in Sokode-Lokoe. He highlighted the high cost of imported building materials as a major hurdle.
This, according to Ledi, is fueled by the weakening cedi and makes housing unaffordable for many Ghanaians, hindering the construction industry’s growth.
The meeting’s theme, “Building a Sustainable Future; Innovations and Collaborations in Construction,” underscores the association’s focus on long-term solutions. Ledi specifically pointed out that the high import content of building materials, coupled with rising prices due to currency fluctuations, renders government affordable housing initiatives irrelevant to the average Ghanaian salary earner.
By implementing a local content policy, the ABCECG hopes to see a shift towards domestically produced construction materials. This would not only bring down costs but also create a more sustainable and self-sufficient construction sector in Ghana.
