Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Expands Dialysis Services

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has significantly improved its capacity to treat kidney disease by installing three new dialysis machines.

These machines, valued at over GH¢1.5 million, were purchased using the hospital’s internally generated funds and bring the total number of dialysis machines at KATH to seven.

During a recent inspection tour, KATH’s CEO, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, announced the upcoming arrival of five more dialysis machines in early next month.

These additional machines, courtesy of Springfield and Ghana Airport Company Limited, will increase KATH’s dialysis capacity to twelve machines.

Professor Addai-Mensah also highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Health to equip teaching hospitals across the country with more dialysis machines.

He mentioned ongoing discussions with CEOs and engineers to ensure these facilities have the necessary resources.

The inspection tour also included a visit to the ongoing construction of a three-story hostel for patients’ relatives. This project, nearing 80% completion, will provide accommodation for over 100 people upon completion.

Prof. Addai-Mensah explained that while providing such a facility is not typically within KATH’s core mandate, the need to address the issue of loitering relatives necessitated a “build, operate, and transfer” arrangement for the project.

Finally, the inspection included the refurbished physiotherapy center.

The CEO assured that efforts are underway to improve the limb fitting center as well.

The improved dialysis services and new patient hostel represent significant steps forward for KATH in its mission to provide quality healthcare to the community.
