Canada Doubles Down On Supporting African Union’s Development Goals

  • This collaboration signals a new era of cooperation

In a significant move to strengthen its partnership with Africa, Canada has announced a major boost in funding for the African Union (AU).

This new commitment aims to accelerate progress towards the AU’s Agenda 2063, a blueprint for a secure and prosperous Africa.

A Pledged Increase for Progress

During a high-level dialogue between Canadian and AU representatives, Canada pledged an additional $20 million to the AU.

This brings the total support to $7.5 million for flexible use, $2.5 million specifically for peace and security programs, and $10 million dedicated to education and vocational training across Africa.

Building on Shared Priorities

This increased support builds on discussions between Prime Minister Trudeau and AU Chairperson Faki in 2020.

Their focus was on shared goals like protecting democracy, gender equality, and ensuring food security. The recent Canada-African Union Commission High-Level Dialogue marked a turning point, being the first of its kind for Canada. It fostered collaboration on peace, development, and economic ties between the two continents.

Investing in the Future

“By doubling our grant to the African Union, we are not only reinforcing our partnership but also investing in the future of the continent,” stated Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen.

The additional funds are allocated over five years, empowering the AU to pursue its goals and drive progress across Africa.

Beyond Financial Support

Canada’s commitment extends beyond just financial aid. The dialogue resulted in over $223 million in project funding for African countries.

This funding tackles critical areas like peace and security, economic development (including support for small businesses), and sustainable development initiatives that promote gender equality.

A New Era of Cooperation

This renewed partnership signifies a significant step forward for Canada and Africa. The ongoing dialogue format and planned sectoral discussions on trade and development demonstrate a commitment to working together.

Canada also welcomed the granting of privileges and immunities to AU Commission officials, further solidifying the partnership.

This collaboration signals a new era of cooperation between Canada and the African Union, with a shared vision for a brighter, more prosperous future for Africa.
