Asantehene Celebrates 25 Years as Freemason with No Regrets

Story Highlights
  • Historic dual milestones
  • Global freemason tribute
  • Unity across borders

Ghana witnessed a unique ceremony on May 25, 2024, as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked two significant milestones.

This dual celebration honored both his 25th anniversary as the Asantehene, the King of the Ashanti people, and his 25th year as a Freemason.

Freemasons from across Ghana, West Africa, and even the world, converged to pay tribute to the revered leader. The Asantehene holds the esteemed title of Grand Patron within the Ghanaian Freemasons, known as the Grand Lodge of Ghana.

During the ceremony, held at the Bro Otumfuo Sir Agyemang Prempeh II Masonic Hall, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II openly reflected on his initial uncertainties about joining the Freemasons.

He acknowledged the natural curiosity one feels when entering a new organization, especially one shrouded in a bit of mystery.

However, after a quarter-century of membership, the Asantehene declared he has no regrets. He expressed his appreciation for the experiences gained and the deeper understanding of what it means to be a Freemason.

The event wasn’t solely focused on the Asantehene’s anniversaries. It also marked the 15th anniversary of the Grand Lodge of Ghana itself. Members, attired in their distinctive Masonic regalia including aprons and gloves, participated in traditional Masonic ceremonies.

This gathering wasn’t limited to just Ghanaian Freemasons. Several prominent figures were present, including government ministers and leaders from other Grand Lodges.

Representatives from Liberia, England, and Nigeria all attended to pay their respects and celebrate the occasion.

The ceremony highlighted the strong ties that bind the Freemasons together, not just within Ghana but internationally. It also served as a testament to the long and distinguished reign of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
