The CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Dacosta Aboagye, has emphasized the importance of health insurance for visitors to Ghana. In an interview, Dr. Aboagye stated that it is a constitutional requirement for non-Ghanaians to have health insurance when visiting the country.
Dr. Aboagye shared a personal experience, saying, “I have seen a situation when some of my friends have come to this country and they are sick. And they are calling me, ‘which facilities should we go?'”
He explained that having health insurance would provide visitors with access to designated facilities for healthcare services if they fall ill during their stay. This, in turn, could generate additional funds for the NHIA and help expand health coverage for all Ghanaians.
Dr. Aboagye also highlighted the importance of preventive measures in fighting cancer, particularly breast and cervical cancer. He emphasized the need for regular Pap smears and HPV screening, saying, “I believe that HPV, we must be able to do Pap smear. It must be screened. The Pap smear test we must also consider that. The main thing is we need to start somewhere. Once you start, you will see that, you will now get the clear picture.”
Additionally, Dr. Aboagye encouraged Ghanaians to prioritize physical activity and healthy eating, saying, “I will encourage Ghanaians to take physical activity very serious. When you wake up, just do some small exercise. Just be stretching. At least thirty minutes of walk. Go to the gym. Go to Aburi Mountains. Just be walking. Those are the things that we need. Eat good nutrients.”
Overall, Dr. Aboagye’s comments emphasize the importance of health insurance and preventive measures in ensuring the well-being of visitors and citizens alike.
