The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has dismissed claims of financial hardship, according to CEO Dr. Dacosta Aboagye.
Dr. Aboagye emphasized the NHIA’s strong financial standing, highlighting their monthly payouts ranging from GH₵180 million to GH₵250 million.
“An organization paying such amounts cannot be bankrupt,” Dr. Aboagye asserted during an interview on JoyNews’ AM show. He did, however, acknowledge the importance of timely funding from the Ministry of Finance for smooth operation.
“Consistent release of funds is crucial for sustainability,” Dr. Aboagye explained. While he confirmed recent discussions with the Ministry regarding upcoming disbursements, he expressed confidence in their commitment, citing assurances from the Finance Minister.
Dr. Aboagye also reassured the public about the NHIA’s financial security amidst Ghana’s involvement with the IMF and upcoming elections.
He clarified that NHIA resources are not dependent on IMF support and are protected under their social protection program.
“Ultimately, Ghanaians contribute to the NHIA,” Dr. Aboagye concluded. “We urge the Ministry of Finance to prioritize social protection by releasing the necessary funds. I have no doubt they will fulfill their obligation to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.”
