President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his confidence in Ghana’s ability to harness digital innovation to drive economic growth and create jobs. He believes that digital transformation is key to unlocking new levels of efficiency, transparency, and accountability within public institutions.
Speaking at the 11th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards/Councils, Chief Directors, and Chief Executives of the Ghana Public Services, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of leveraging digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and blockchain to streamline bureaucratic processes, improve decision-making, and enhance the overall effectiveness of government operations.
Ghana has committed to investing in digital infrastructure and connectivity to bridge the digital divide and ensure that every Ghanaian has access to affordable and reliable internet services. This includes expanding broadband coverage, promoting digital literacy programs, and supporting the development of local content and applications.
By empowering citizens to participate fully in the digital economy, Ghana can reap the benefits of the fourth industrial revolution. President Akufo-Addo noted that his government has embarked on an unprecedented agenda to digitalize the business processes of the public services of Ghana, led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Vice President Bawumia has been instrumental in championing digital transformation, and President Akufo-Addo praised his efforts, as well as those of Senior Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo Maafo, for working to digitalize processes such as passport acquisition, driving licenses, and tax-related documents.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the flexibility, convenience, and cost management benefits of digitalization, and charged public services organizations to improve their services through digital transformation to deliver unmatched customer experience.
The President’s vision is to reposition Ghana’s public sector to embrace digital transformation for higher efficiency, which he believes is a clear route to a stronger and more robust economy. He urged Chairpersons of Governing Boards and Councils, Chief Directors, and Chief Executives of Ghana’s Public Services to mainstream digitalization of business processes.
Ghana’s economy has faced challenges in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the effects of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, which led to difficulties and a need for assistance from the International Monetary Fund. However, President Akufo-Addo noted that the economy has turned the corner, and the IMF has stated that “the worst is over for Ghana.”
By maintaining macroeconomic stability, ensuring debt sustainability, and building the groundwork for faster and more inclusive growth, Ghana is working to rebuild domestic and international investor confidence in the economy. President Akufo-Addo is confident that digital innovation will play a key role in driving economic growth and job creation in Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to digital innovation and transformation is a critical step towards unlocking Ghana’s economic potential and empowering citizens to participate fully in the digital economy. With the right investments and leadership, Ghana can harness the power of digital technologies to drive growth, create jobs, and build a stronger and more resilient economy.
