Nigerian Government Approves Ban on Money Rituals in Nollywood Films

The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has announced that the federal government has approved the prohibition of money rituals, ritual killings, and glamorising vices in Nollywood films.

According to the CEO of NFVCB, Shaibu Husseini, the approval was granted by the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, pursuant to section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004. The regulation, titled “Prohibition of Money Ritual, Ritual Killing, Tobacco, Tobacco Products, Nicotine Product Promotion and Glamorisation Display in Movies, Musical Videos and Skits Regulations 2024,” has been forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Justice for gazetting.

Husseini made the announcement at an event in Enugu, organised by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), which was attended by movie producers, directors, actors, and leaders of various guilds and associations in the Nigerian film industry.

He stated that the sensitisation programme was aimed at educating stakeholders on the dangers of glamorising smoking and other vices in Nigerian movies, particularly among teens and young adults who constitute the largest segment of Nigerian movie viewers.

The NFVCB boss emphasized the need for the film industry to place a high premium on progress and to develop creative content that discourages smoking and promotes positive health messages. He also noted that the NFVCB was prepared to take leadership in implementing innovative ways to achieve its mandate.

The regulation is seen as a significant step towards sanitising the film industry and promoting a positive image of Nigeria.
