NIA Rebukes Omane Boamah for Spreading Misinformation On Pusiga Pilot Project

Story Highlights
  • The NIA labeled Dr. Boamah's claims as false and baseless
  • He claimed this was done to aid illegal voters
  • The NIA denied allegations of registering unqualified applicants

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has refuted allegations made by Dr. Omane Boamah, Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criminalized state institutions, including the NIA.

The NIA labeled Dr. Boamah’s claims as false and baseless, urging the public to disregard them.

Dr. Boamah had alleged that the NIA, headed by Dr. Bawumia’s friend Ken Attafuah, was issuing Ghana Cards to Ghanaians living along the Ghana-Burkina Faso border in Pusiga as part of a politically motivated enterprise.

He claimed this was done to aid illegal voters in the upcoming election.

The NIA responded, stating that the allegations were unnecessary and unfortunate, and that the Authority has not been criminalized by the NPP or any other entity.

The NIA explained that its collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to register Ghanaians in Pusiga and surrounding areas was a legitimate and necessary exercise to ensure vulnerable populations could access public services and facilitate cross-border movements.

The NIA denied allegations of registering unqualified applicants, including minors, and urged Dr. Boamah to report any evidence of such activities to the police.

The Authority emphasized its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and transparency in its operations.

In conclusion, the NIA served Dr. Boamah a “menu of purposes” the Authority provides to promote Ghana’s social and political development, including registering Ghanaians, issuing National Identity Cards, and ensuring data accuracy and security.

The NIA highlighted its achievements, including registering over 17 million Ghanaians and issuing over 17 million Ghana Cards since 2019.
