The National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Ayesu Ntim, has been appointed as the board chairman for the National Petroleum Authority (NPA). This appointment was made official on Tuesday, May 21, when Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh swore Mr. Ntim into office at a brief ceremony held at the ministry.
Mr. Ntim takes over the role from Joe Addo-Jobo, who has been serving as the board chairman since 2017. The Energy Minister expressed his confidence in Mr. Ntim’s ability to lead the NPA, stating that he has the necessary leadership skills to steer the organization towards achieving its objectives for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
In a Facebook post, the Energy Minister wrote: “[The] National Chairman of my beloved New Patriotic Party, Mr. Ntim is not new to leadership and therefore, I have no doubt that he has what it takes to steer the NPA to achieve its objectives for the benefit of all Ghanaians.”
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh also charged the new chairman of the downstream regulator to focus on key priorities, including strengthening regulatory frameworks, enhancing operational efficiencies, and ensuring that the NPA operates with the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
Mr. Ntim has a rich history with the NPP, having been a member of the Danquah-Busia Club, which transformed into the New Patriotic Party in 1992. He has served the party in various capacities over the years, demonstrating his commitment and dedication to the party’s ideals.
Between 2001 and 2005, Mr. Ntim served as the National First Vice-Chairman of the NPP, gaining valuable experience in leadership and party administration. He has also contested for the chairmanship position four times without success, before finally being elected as the party’s national chairman in 2022.
In the 2018 contest, Mr. Ntim placed second after polling 2,515 votes against Freddie Blay’s 3,021 votes. However, he did not give up and continued to work towards his goal, eventually succeeding in his fifth attempt.
As the new board chairman of the NPA, Mr. Ntim is expected to bring his wealth of experience and leadership skills to bear on the organization, driving it towards achieving its objectives and contributing to the growth and development of the energy sector in Ghana.
