Fuel Shortage Looms as Tanker Drivers’ Strike Continues – COPEC

Story Highlights
  • COPEC warns of looming fuel shortage if strike is not resolved
  • Tanker drivers' indefinite strike enters second day
  • Fuel queues likely if strike persists beyond 72 hours

A potential fuel shortage is on the horizon if the demands of the Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union are not addressed promptly, warns the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).

The union’s members embarked on an indefinite sit-down strike on Tuesday, May 21, seeking improved conditions of service.

According to COPEC, failure to resolve the drivers’ concerns will have severe consequences.

“If the strike lasts for 72 hours, petroleum consumers may soon have to queue at fuel pumps for the product,” cautioned Duncan Amoah, Executive Secretary of COPEC. “The oil marketing companies cannot get you the products without those tanker drivers, and what that adds to the woes of the Ghanaian is that if that strike is not called off within the next 48 to 72 hours, we may soon have to queue to get fuel because the supply at the various fuel stations is likely to run out.”
