The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has discontinued its scholarship scheme for Senior High School (SHS) students, which was established over 50 years ago to support the education of cocoa farmers’ children.

This announcement was made by Deputy Chief Executive of COCOBOD, Emmanuel Ray Ankrah, during the inauguration of the Board members for the Cocoa Board Education Trust at its headquarters in Accra.

The decision to discontinue the scholarship scheme was made after extensive consultation with stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, the Council of State, Ghana Education Service, Cocoa Farmer Associations, and other relevant institutions, following the introduction of the Free Senior High School policy in 2017.

Instead, the new Cocoa Education Trust will focus on providing basic model schools in deprived cocoa-growing communities, aimed at bridging the educational infrastructural gap between rural and urban areas and facilitating access to quality basic education in cocoa regions.

The six-member Board of Trustees includes Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison (Chairman), Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Dr. Eric Nkansah, and the 2022 National Best Cocoa farmer, Bismarck Fuachie, among others.

The Board Chairman of COCOBOD, Peter Mac Manu, emphasized the organization’s commitment to the well-being and prosperity of cocoa farmers and their children, while Dr. Ernest Addison, Board Chairman of the COCOBOD Education Trust, thanked COCOBOD management for their trust and promised to work towards making a meaningful impact on the lives of cocoa farmers and their children.
