  • Organic waste will be processed into compost fertilizer
  • Zoomlion's efforts have also garnered international recognition

Ghana recently took a significant step forward in waste management with the opening of a new advanced recycling plant in Kperisi, near Wa. This 400-ton-per-day facility, known as the Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant (IRECOP), marks a first for northern Ghana.

The IRECOP plant, built by Zoomlion, a Ghanaian waste management company, will process waste from all 11 municipal and district assemblies in the Upper West Region. This represents a major commitment by the government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to improve waste management across the country.

Collaboration for a Greener Future

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project. He praised President Akufo-Addo’s dedication to waste management reforms and acknowledged Zoomlion’s role in building these facilities. Zoomlion’s Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, expressed gratitude to past and present governments for their support.

Turning Waste into Opportunity

The Kperisi-Wa IRECOP offers a sustainable solution by transforming waste into valuable resources. Organic waste will be processed into compost fertilizer, providing a much-needed boost to Ghana’s agricultural sector. Zoomlion anticipates producing over 2 million bags of compost fertilizer annually from its 10 IRECOP plants nationwide.

The plant goes beyond just regular waste. It also features a dedicated medical waste treatment facility, ensuring safe disposal of hazardous materials.

Economic and Educational Benefits

The new IRECOP plants are expected to create significant job opportunities, both directly at the facilities and indirectly in supporting industries. Additionally, these plants will serve as research and training centers for universities and technical colleges. This focus on education positions Ghana as a leader in sustainable waste management practices.

Zoomlion’s efforts have also garnered international recognition. The company received carbon trading authorization from the Ghanaian government, projecting environmental and financial benefits in the coming years.

A Cause for Celebration

The opening of the Kperisi-Wa IRECOP was met with enthusiasm from local leaders. The Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, highlighted the facility’s potential for job creation, tourism, and research collaboration. Stakeholders from government officials to traditional leaders and international partners were acknowledged for their contributions to this milestone achievement.

Looking Ahead: The Benefits of IRECOP

Zoomlion’s IRECOP facilities utilize advanced technology to convert waste into resources. These facilities offer a multitude of benefits, including:

  • Environmental Protection: Reduced reliance on landfills and pollution through waste recycling and eco-friendly compost production.
  • Agricultural Support: Organic fertilizer to improve soil health and agricultural output, contributing to food security.
  • Economic Growth: Creation of direct and indirect jobs, boosting local economies, and encouraging environmentally friendly businesses.
  • Public Health Benefits: Safe disposal of hazardous waste, lowering health risks associated with poor waste management.

The opening of the Kperisi-Wa IRECOP represents a significant step forward for Ghana’s waste management infrastructure. This project not only improves sanitation in the Upper West Region but also positions Ghana as a leader in sustainable waste management practices across Africa.
