A Special Aide to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has defended the former president’s handling of corruption during his administration. Joyce Bawa Mogtari, in an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, May 21, praised Mahama’s swift action on corruption issues, despite criticisms aimed at him.
According to Mogtari, anti-corruption crusaders have commended Mahama’s transparency in handling corruption cases during his tenure. She cited instances where Mahama allowed himself to be investigated by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), and never attempted to hide any reports from the commission.
“I have not doubted him – I remember in some cases where the Attorney General was asked to report on a matter to generate a report, Mr. Mahama handled corruption very swiftly,” Mogtari said. “He allowed himself to be investigated by CHRAJ at the time, and we were all witnesses to this matter. Did you ever recall Mr. Mahama tried to hide any report that came from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice? No.”
Mogtari contrasted Mahama’s approach with the current administration, which she argued has frustrated the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, who is now facing impeachment proceedings. Despite passing the Right to Information Act and the Special Prosecutor’s Act, the current government has faced ongoing concerns about corruption.
“Mr. Mahama has indicated that his administration was not perfect and also admitted that the criticisms that were directed at his administration were unfair,” Mogtari added, highlighting Mahama’s willingness to acknowledge and learn from mistakes.
