Powerful storms in Houston, Texas, have left four people dead and almost a million homes and businesses without power.

Mayor’s warning

The Mayor of Houston, John Whitmire, said the storm has 100 mph winds, which is the equivalent of Hurricane Ike, and has caused considerable damage downtown.

He warned people to stay indoors and avoid the heavily hit downtown area.

Cause of deaths

Two of the deaths were caused by fallen trees, and one was caused by a crane that was blown over.

The storm has now moved on to neighboring Louisiana, with flood warnings in place for the Gulf Coast.

In Houston, traffic lights were out, office windows were blown through, and glass was strewn across the city’s streets. Video footage from downtown shows windows and part of the roof at the Hyatt Regency blown out from the storm’s strong winds.

The Houston Independent School District canceled school on Friday following the storm.
