President Akufo-Addo has submitted a request to the Chief Justice urging the dismissal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyabeng due to purported misconduct.
This petition, initially presented by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu on April 30, 2024, was subsequently transmitted to Justice Gertrude Torkonoo on May 6, 2024.
Martin Amidu’s accusations against Agyabeng span various alleged transgressions, including irregularities in procuring vehicles for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), purported misconduct involving judges, and alleged violations of citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions.
The petition also raises concerns about infringements on the right to information and questionable appointments within the OSP.
In accordance with the constitutional protocols outlined in Article 146, the Chief Justice is presently evaluating whether there exists adequate evidence to convene a committee to assess Agyabeng’s impeachment.
This development follows a contentious press briefing conducted by Agyabeng, during which he leveled allegations against the judiciary, triggering accusations from former Attorney General Martin Amidu that judges were being unfairly criticized.
Martin Amidu asserted that Agyabeng’s actions, including the press conference and the arrest of individuals like Cecilia Dapaah and Prof. Frimpong Boateng, constitute abuses of authority and a disregard for the rights of citizens.
Martin Amidu raised concerns regarding Agyabeng’s requisition of detailed information on OSP personnel and alleges irregularities in the appointment process within the office.
