Yvonne Nelson summoned by Police

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arhin Kwasi Annor, has invited actress and producer Yvonne Nelson and two other conveners to a meeting on Wednesday, May 15. The meeting aims to discuss the modalities of Yvonne Nelson’s planned “Dumsor Must Stop” demonstration, scheduled for May 25.

This development comes after Yvonne Nelson notified the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Monday, May 13, about her intention to embark on a protest against the erratic power cuts that have been plaguing the country. In a tweet on Thursday, May 9, Yvonne Nelson posted a letter jointly signed by herself and two others, indicating their intention to hold a vigil on May 25 at the Revolution Square from 8:30 am to 12 midnight.

The letter to the IGP stated that the vigil aims to demonstrate the frustrations of citizens over the “unacceptable erratic electricity supply” and to give the President “ocular evidence” of the debilitating effects of the power outages. Yvonne Nelson has been vocal about her dissatisfaction with the frequent power cuts, calling for support from the public to join her in protesting against “dumsor” (a local term for power outages).

Notably, Yvonne Nelson, along with other celebrities, organized a massive demonstration against “dumsor” in 2015 under the John Mahama administration, expressing displeasure over the consistent power outages. She is now seeking to replicate this effort and has courted the support of the general public to join an imminent protest against “dumsor”. The meeting with the Police Commander is likely to discuss the logistics and security arrangements for the planned demonstration.
