School Building Collapse Raises Safety Concerns

Story Highlights
  • Twenty narrowly escaped injury when their classroom building collapsed
  • The cause for concern lies in the building's very construction
  • Their quick thinking undoubtedly prevented a tragedy.

A terrifying incident occurred on Monday at Zamboree D/A Basic School in Ghana’s Central Region. Thankfully, no students were harmed, but twenty narrowly escaped injury when their classroom building collapsed during a rainstorm.

Unsafe Structure, Unheeded Pleas:

The cause for concern lies in the building’s very construction. Made of mud and wood, it offered little protection from the elements, leaving students exposed to the whims of the weather. This incident highlights years of neglect and unanswered pleas from community leaders for government support in improving the school’s infrastructure.

Prompt Action, Urgent Needs:

According to the School Management Committee Chairman, Mr. Jacob Tetteh Agbeko, the collapse occurred during morning classes. Fortunately, teachers spotted the danger signs and swiftly evacuated students from the affected classrooms before the building gave way. Their quick thinking undoubtedly prevented a tragedy.

The collapse has left the school scrambling for solutions. Classes have been merged to accommodate displaced students. Mr. Agbeko emphasized the urgent need for assistance from the government, district assembly, and private organizations.

Abandoned Project, Heightened Fears:

Adding to the frustration is the presence of an unfinished six-unit classroom block started in 2013. This abandoned structure sits idle, posing a potential safety hazard as it becomes overgrown and attracts wildlife. Parents and students alike pleaded with the government to complete this project to provide much-needed additional space and a safer learning environment.

Seeking Support, Waiting for Action:

Local authorities, including the Assemblyman, Mr. Thomas Yogarim, have reported the incident to the National Disaster Management Organisation and the District Assembly. The school community awaits assessment and assistance to ensure the safety of their children and a proper learning environment.
