The Enchi District Magistrate Court has ordered a 23-year-old man, Abednego Nbim, to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Coast. This comes after he allegedly murdered his 60-year-old father, Yaw Nbim, at Kuesuea, a cottage in old Yakase in the Aowin Municipality, Western Region.

Abednego Nbim, who is currently unemployed, is facing a provisional charge of murder, and his plea has not been taken. The trial judge, Mr. Lawrence Buonor-Buer, has adjourned the case to May 20.

According to the prosecution, Detective Chief Inspector Joseph Kwadwo Agyare, the complainant, Akosua Andolo, is a farmer and the suspect’s mother. She lived together with the deceased (her husband), the suspect, and other siblings at Kuesuea.

The court heard that the suspect’s parents realized abnormal behavior on the part of their son and took him to the Enchi Government Hospital’s Mental Health Unit for examination and treatment. On April 1, the suspect was admitted to the health facility.

A referral letter was issued to the parents to take the suspect to the Wa Regional Hospital-Mental Health Unit for further medical care. However, on April 5, the suspect was discharged, and the parents took him home, claiming he was suffering from a spiritual attack.

According to the prosecution, on April 13, at about 7 pm, the complainant went to the back of the house to have her bath, and the suspect followed her in an attempt to have sex with her. She managed to free herself, and while calming down the son, Yaw Nbim also emerged to handle the situation.

The suspect then attacked his father, and the suspect’s younger brother reported the case to the Committee Chairman of Old Yakasi community. The complainant raised the alarm, and the suspect was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police.

The complainant later reported to the committee that her husband was nowhere to be found after the suspect allegedly chased him out from the cottage. The opinion leaders organized a search party and found the body of Yaw Nbim in a nearby bush about 90 meters away from their cottage on April 14, 2024, at about 1 pm.

The case has been adjourned to May 20, and the suspect will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine his state of mind at the time of the alleged crime. The outcome of the evaluation will likely influence the direction of the case.
