Ghana’s Chartered Institute of Supply Chain Management (CISCM) wrapped up its International Supply Chain Week with a focus on integrated supply chain management as a key driver of economic development in Africa.

The public lecture, held in Tamale, highlighted the importance of African governments adopting a comprehensive strategy for local content development.

This approach would prioritize using local resources and industries to fulfill national needs and promote economic growth across the continent.

Integrated Supply Chain Management: The Key to Success

Lead Executive of CISCM, Richard Asante Amoah, emphasized that integrated supply chain management is crucial for facilitating development.

He urged organizations and businesses to incorporate these practices into their operations for the collective benefit of the economy.

Mr. Amoah stressed the need for sustainable local content development. He explained that by relying on local resources and industries, African nations can reduce dependence on imports and the associated inflation.

He highlighted the potential for export opportunities if local industries can compete effectively at a global level.

Challenges and Opportunities

Mr. Amoah acknowledged the existence of numerous industries and factories within Ghana. However, he expressed concern about the lack of practical measures taken by leaders to ensure their long-term sustainability. He identified key metrics for assessing business sustainability, including societal impact, technological advancement, economies of scale, environmental responsibility, and strong political will.

A Call to Action for Leaders

Mr. Amoah urged governments and political leaders to integrate supply chain management principles into their decision-making processes. He emphasized that without a focus on integrated supply chain management, initiatives like a 24-hour economy or a digital economy risk becoming mere political slogans.

He implored leaders to prioritize a holistic approach, ensuring clear objectives, timely resource allocation for project delivery, and the achievement of desired value. He cautioned against excessive waste within the system and advocated for a shift towards shared interests that benefit the nation, rather than personal gain.

Lead Consultant for CISCM, Dr. James Kofi Chamenyi, encouraged individuals, organizations, and businesses to embrace the field of integrated supply chain management. By acquiring expertise in this area, they can enhance their planning and decision-making capabilities.

The event included the presentation of a Corporate Members Certificate to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDco) by CISCM. The lecture, held in collaboration with NEDco, VRA, and other partners, served as a powerful call to action for African leaders to leverage the power of integrated supply chain management for sustainable economic development.
