The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced on Monday the appointment of Finidi George as the new head coach of the country’s men’s senior national team. The 53-year-old football veteran signed a two-year contract, effective immediately.
George’s primary objective will be to lead the team to victory in the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco, following Nigeria’s heartbreaking loss to Ivory Coast in the final of the previous edition.
Although new to the position, George is no stranger to the team, having previously led Nigeria in international friendlies against Ghana and Mali in March, with a record of one win and one loss [W1, L1]. He also served as part of his predecessor Jose Peseiro’s backroom staff for twenty months.
As a player, George was an instrumental member of the Nigerian team that won the 1994 African Cup of Nations, and the NFF is confident that his experience and expertise will bring success to the team.
“We are thrilled to have Finidi George at the helm of our men’s senior national team,” said an NFF spokesperson. “His wealth of experience and knowledge of the game will undoubtedly help us achieve our goals.”
George’s first task will be to prepare the team for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers, with the aim of securing a spot in the 2025 tournament.
