Dominic Thiem, a former US Open champion, has announced his retirement from tennis at the end of the 2024 season.

The 30-year-old Austrian cites a lingering wrist injury and a personal desire to move on as reasons for his decision.

Thiem, who reached four Grand Slam finals in his career, hopes to play his final match at a home tournament in Vienna in October.

“This decision is both difficult and emotional,” Thiem said. “My wrist hasn’t fully recovered, and I’ve been contemplating this for a while now.”

Thiem’s career highlight was his 2020 US Open victory, which propelled him to a career-best ranking of number 3 in the world. He was also a runner-up at the French Open in 2018 and 2019, and the Australian Open in 2020.

A wrist injury in 2021 sidelined Thiem for nearly a year and saw his ranking plummet outside the top 350. While he managed to climb back into the top 100 last year, he hasn’t been able to recapture his peak form.

Despite the challenges, Thiem reflects fondly on his career. “I achieved more than I ever imagined,” he said. “It’s been an amazing journey, but ultimately, I believe retiring at the end of this season is the right decision.”
