Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has denied a request by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to access serial numbers of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits.

The EC cited potential security risks as the reason behind their refusal.

The NDC sought access to these serial numbers, currently in use for the limited voter registration exercise. However, in a statement issued on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, the EC warned that releasing such information could compromise the integrity of the electoral system.

The Commission assured the public that they remain committed to transparency throughout the registration process. They emphasized that alternative measures are in place to ensure the exercise is conducted fairly and openly.

“Sharing these serial numbers with any external entity, including political parties, poses a significant risk,” the EC’s statement cautioned. “This is why such information has never been released since Ghana’s adoption of the biometric voting system.”

The EC’s decision highlights the importance they place on safeguarding the electoral system. They prioritize preventing security threats associated with BVR kit data over individual stakeholder requests.

The Commission concluded by reaffirming their commitment to transparency. They stressed that while they have nothing to hide, protecting the integrity of the electoral process remains their top priority.

This rejection has created friction between the EC and the NDC, reflecting existing tensions surrounding the voter registration exercise.
