Train Tunnel to Bridge the Gap Between Africa and Europe

Story Highlights
  • Spain is considering building a first-of-its-kind underwater railway tunnel to connect to Morocco
  • Airplanes and ferries are the main ways to travel between Spain and Morocco
  • The project's proposed completion date is 2030

Spain is exploring an ambitious project to construct an underwater railway tunnel linking its territory with Morocco, a renowned tourist hotspot. This initiative aims to revolutionize travel between Europe and Africa by offering a rapid and eco-friendly alternative to conventional transportation methods.

The proposed €6 billion project, if realized, would see the construction of a 27-kilometer tunnel beneath the Strait of Gibraltar, integrating Europe’s high-speed rail network with North Africa. With plans targeting completion by 2030, the timing aligns with the FIFA World Cup jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, enhancing connectivity for fans and travelers alike.

Currently, flights and ships dominate travel options between the two continents. However, the advent of this underwater railway tunnel could potentially transform the landscape, making train travel a preferred choice, especially given its ecological advantages.

The envisioned route would facilitate high-speed train services, significantly reducing travel time between Madrid and Casablanca, which currently stands at around 5.5 hours by train and almost two hours by air.

Moreover, with the European Union committing €2.3 billion towards the project, it underscores the collaborative effort towards sustainable transport infrastructure.

This initiative not only reflects a resurgence of interest in rail travel across Europe but also underscores the continent’s commitment to environmentally friendly transportation solutions amidst global climate change concerns. As such, the proposed underwater railway tunnel could mark a significant stride towards fostering sustainable mobility on an international scale.
