GHS Urges Public to Get COVID-19 Vaccine

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) and its partners under the Ministry of Health are reminding the public of the ongoing National COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign (NaCVaDs), which ends on May 9. The campaign aims to increase immunization against COVID-19 by vaccinating people with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Eligible individuals include those aged 18 and older who have not received the COVID-19 vaccine, those who have not completed their vaccination series, and those due for booster doses. This is the 10th round of the national vaccination campaign, themed “Protect Yourself, Protect Your Family, Get Vaccinated Against COVID-19”.

Speaking at a press briefing in Tamale, Northern Regional Director of Health Dr. Abdulai Abukari emphasized the importance of participation in the exercise. He noted that the region has conducted nine rounds of national COVID-19 immunization and 18 rounds of Global Communities’ Supported Regional COVID-19 vaccination campaigns. “The vaccination will take place at health centres and at temporary posts set up in schools, markets, churches, bus stations and even house-to-house in your neighborhood to vaccinate all eligible persons”.

A total of 293 teams of vaccinators, volunteers, and 67 supervisors have been recruited and trained to undertake the vaccination exercise during the campaign period. Dr. Abukari emphasized that COVID-19 vaccines are safe, free, and available to all citizens with a national identification card.

Despite significant improvements in the national response to the pandemic over the past four years, cases are still recorded globally, underscoring the need for vaccination. Dr. Abukari dispelled myths against COVID-19 vaccination, stating that vaccines have helped control the pandemic worldwide.

Northern Regional Coordinator of Expanded Programme on Immunisation Fuseini Mahama commended the region’s management of the disease, noting that the response to COVID-19 in the Northern Region is implemented within the framework of the national response and coordinated by a multi-sectoral Regional Public Health Emergency Management Committee (RPHEMC) under the chairmanship of the Regional Minister.
