“NHIS Has Improved Under Akufo-Addo Administration” – Dr Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has praised the significant improvements made to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) under the Akufo-Addo administration. In a recent interview, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the notable advancements in the health sector’s infrastructure and the expansion of NHIS coverage to include treatments for childhood cancers and hydroxyurea for sickle-cell patients.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that the NHIS has become more efficient and effective under the current government, with financial resources and digitization efforts enhancing its operations. He noted that the introduction of the NHIS app has enabled Ghanaians to register, enroll, and renew their subscriptions using their Ghanacard.

“The NHIS is working better under our government than it used to be. We have resourced it financially, digitized it, and linked it to the Ghana card. Today, your NHIS number is your Ghanacard number,” Dr. Bawumia explained.

He further highlighted the government’s efforts to connect health facilities under the Ghana Health Service to a single digital platform, ensuring seamless communication and access to healthcare services across the country.

Dr. Bawumia pledged to continue investing in expanding healthcare infrastructure, particularly in underserved rural areas, to ensure equitable access to quality services. He also promised to implement targeted initiatives to address healthcare disparities among vulnerable populations and increase recruitment, training, and retention of healthcare professionals to address workforce shortages.
