The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has delivered a major boost to Regional Football Associations (RFAs) across the country.
A sum of GH¢300,000 has been released to support the payment of officiating fees for various league competitions organized by the RFAs.
This initiative fulfills a pledge made by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku at a Congress held in Kumasi last July.
The funding aims to address the historical challenge of covering refereeing costs in the Regional Leagues, specifically for competitions like Division Two, Three, Regional Women’s Division One, and Colts U-13, 15, and U-17 leagues.
Ensuring Equitable Distribution
The GFA implemented a distribution strategy that considers the number of clubs within each region, the number of matches scheduled, and the varying costs of refereeing services across different regions.
This ensures a fair allocation of funds. Greater Accra RFA received GH¢50,000, while other regions (excluding Upper East and West) received GH¢30,000 each.
The Upper East and West RFAs were allocated GH¢20,000 each.
Investing in the Future
The GFA’s commitment extends beyond immediate financial support. An additional GH¢200,000 will be invested in the “Catch Them Young” refereeing program. This initiative aims to train and prepare aspiring referees to officiate in the Regional Leagues effectively.
The GFA has already provided resources for this program, including whistles, assistant referee flags, and red and yellow cards. In the coming weeks, they will further equip the “Catch Them Young” referees with official uniforms distributed to the RFAs.
This comprehensive approach by the GFA demonstrates a strong focus on strengthening the foundation of Ghanaian football by supporting regional competitions and nurturing the next generation of referees.
