Two Nigerian soldiers will face a court trial over a drone bombing that killed at least 85 civilians in Kaduna state last year, the defence headquarters announced.

The soldiers will be tried for “acts of omission or commission” related to the incident, which occurred on December 3 during a Muslim religious celebration. At the time, the state governor attributed the civilian deaths to a military drone “mistakenly” targeting terrorists and bandits.

President Bola Tinubu ordered an investigation into the “bombing mishap”, which has now been concluded. According to military spokesman Maj Gen Edward Buba, the investigation was “painstaking” and disciplinary action has been initiated.

Maj Gen Buba emphasized that the incident was a “mistake” and assured that the military is taking precautions to prevent similar strikes on civilians in the future.
