Manchester City Dominates FWA Footballer Of The Year Awards

Manchester City celebrated a double victory at the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year awards, with Phil Foden and Khadija Shaw claiming the top honors in their respective categories.

Foden, the 23-year-old midfield engine, emerged as the clear favorite for the men’s award. He garnered a staggering 42% of the vote, surpassing Declan Rice (2nd) and teammate Rodri (3rd).

His impressive season included 24 goals and 10 assists across 50 appearances for City. This win continues City’s dominance in the FWA awards, with Foden following in the footsteps of Erling Haaland (2023) and Ruben Dias (2021).

“This award is a huge honor,” Foden expressed, emphasizing his focus on finishing the season strong and contributing to more City trophies. Currently, City trails league leaders Arsenal by a single point but holds a game in hand, keeping their quest for a fourth consecutive Premier League title alive.

On the women’s side, Khadija Shaw, the 27-year-old Jamaican striker, reigned supreme. Despite a season-ending foot injury, her remarkable record of 21 goals in just 18 games solidified her position as the Women’s Super League’s top scorer.

She edged out Chelsea’s Lauren James for the award, with teammate Alex Greenwood rounding out the top three.

City midfielder Yui Hasegawa followed closely in fourth, with Brighton’s Elisabeth Terland and City keeper Khiara Keating completing the top six.

Shaw’s win marks the second time a City player has claimed the women’s award since its inception in 2018, following Nikita Parris’ victory in 2019. With two games remaining, City enjoys a comfortable six-point lead at the top of the WSL table.
