The newly renovated Kumasi Airport, now renamed Nana Agyemang Prempeh I International Airport, is set to be commissioned on May 10, 2024, in a grand ceremony which is to be attended by President Akufo-Addo, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and other high-profile dignitaries.
The airport is expected to commence full operations in June once commissioned, with a capacity to handle over 800,000 passengers annually, primarily from the northern and middle belt regions. The facility, managed by the Ghana Airport Company Limited, is undergoing final equipment testing to enable both domestic and international flights.
Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah has expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress, but also emphasized the need for long-term maintenance to ensure the airport’s continued contribution to the socioeconomic development of the Ashanti Region and Ghana as a whole.
The airport’s completion is expected to reduce travel stress for international travelers from the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo, Northern, and Upper Regions, who will no longer need to travel to Accra for international flights. Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has commended the government for the project’s realization, citing its potential to create jobs and boost the local economy.
The airport’s Phase II development, which began in 2018, includes a new terminal building, boarding bridges, road networks, and other facilities to handle one million passengers per annum.
