Asantes Aren’t Self-centred, We are Affectionate- Otumfuo

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has corrected misconceptions surrounding the nature and character of Asantes when it comes to other tribes and ethnic groups. He asserted that Asantes are not self-centered but rather affectionate towards other tribes and ethnic groups.

Premising his statement on past and current relations, the King indicated that the impression is baseless and erroneous.

“In the olden days, when we went to war, we never imposed our rule on the people we conquered. We allowed their leaders to continue ruling. If Asantes are greedy, why didn’t we impose our choice of leaders on them?…”

“You won’t find Anloga, Fante New Town anywhere. We have Zongo and this has been emulated in different places now…We lived peacefully with them. We are not greedy and that is why a lot of ethnic groups have been able to live with us till now and it is a testament to our hospitality.”

He said this while addressing the nation and world at “Ahoho Da” at the Manhyia Palace on April 24, 2024 in Kumasi.

The event is part of activities to mark the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty during which he hosted 43 ethnic groups domiciled on his land.

In his speech, he emphasized that the event served as a testament to the genuine friendship and love exhibited by Asantes towards ethnic groups residing within their territory

“This will enable everyone to know that Asantes do not discriminate. Everyone who joins us is afforded the enabling atmosphere to intermarry, ply their trade and work together. We live together in peace and harmony. Many of the people who live here do not have as much relations with their hometown as they do here. An example is Mr Fugah.”
