Almost a year has elapsed since Victoria Dapaah, also known as Maadwoa, met her tragic end, allegedly at the hands of a police inspector in Kumasi.
Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, known as Tycoon and affiliated with the SWAT Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, faces accusations of fatally shooting the 26-year-old woman in Kumasi’s Adum area on April 20, 2023.
In a surprising twist, Inspector Twumasi, previously rumored to have passed away in custody, appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges of murder.
During the court session on Monday, April 15, 2024, family members were deeply moved as they viewed CCTV footage purportedly depicting the police officer shooting Victoria. However, the distressing video failed to capture the actual shooting incident.
Furthermore, the court admitted a telephone conversation allegedly involving the accused and another woman as evidence.
State prosecutors sought to present a caution statement as evidence, triggering strong opposition from the defense. They argued that the statement was coerced and challenged the procedural integrity of its acquisition.
The defense also argued that the absence of an independent witness during the statement’s procurement constituted a procedural flaw.
In response, the prosecution reminded the court that the accused had opted to communicate in his native language, suggesting his ability to comprehend the statement’s contents.
As a result, the court adjourned the proceedings until May 6, 2024, to allow for thorough legal consideration of the objections raised.
