Ghanaian Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, announced the government’s success in eliminating ghost names from the public payroll system. This follows a similar declaration made by the Controller and Accountant General two months prior.
Previously, concerns existed about unauthorized individuals receiving payments. Mr. Kwaning-Bosompem, the Controller and Accountant General, emphasized efforts to ensure data credibility and prevent such occurrences.
Dr. Bawumia credited the Ghana Card system for its role in achieving this feat. Biometric verification through the Ghana Card exposed the lack of fingerprints associated with ghost names, leading to their removal.
The Vice President highlighted the significant cost savings associated with this initiative. Eliminating ghost workers, pensioners, and National Service personnel saved the government hundreds of millions of Ghana cedis.
While celebrating this achievement, Dr. Bawumia acknowledged it as “just the tip of the iceberg.” He also called for continued collaboration within the justice system to strengthen Ghana’s fight against corruption.
Background:
Earlier in January 2024, the government implemented a policy requiring all government employees to link their Ghana Card details with the payroll system. Dr. Bawumia anticipated this move would significantly contribute to eliminating ghost names.
