Two final year students from Abisco M/A Basic School in Dunkwa-Abasewa, Central Region, lost their lives on Monday, April 8th, 2024, after falling into an abandoned galamsey pit.

The victims, 15-year-old Dominic Abu and 16-year-old Enoch Ogo, were reportedly returning home from school when the incident occurred.

According to reports, one student fell into the pit, and the other, in an attempt to help, also entered the water-filled pit and drowned.

This tragedy has sparked outrage in the community. Ernest Arkon, the Assembly Member for the Compound Electoral Area, expressed his deep concern and called the situation “worrying.” He has issued a four-month ultimatum to both the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament for Upper Denkyira East to address the issue of abandoned galamsey pits.

Mr. Arkon warned that if no action is taken towards land reclamation within the given timeframe, residents will resort to a large-scale demonstration to pressure the government for a solution.
