French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced “considerably reinforced” security measures for Wednesday’s PSG vs Barcelona match due to a “threat” from the Islamic State group. This threat reportedly targeted all Champions League quarter-final matches, not just the one in Paris.
Global Threat, Concerted Efforts
Authorities clarified that ISIS issued a general threat towards the Champions League quarterfinals, not specifically targeting matches in France. Other games on Tuesday include Arsenal vs Bayern Munich and Real Madrid vs Manchester City. Wednesday’s other fixture pits Atletico Madrid against Borussia Dortmund.
Matches to Proceed as Planned
Despite the threat, UEFA, European football’s governing body, confirmed all matches will proceed with enhanced security arrangements in place. PSG coach Luis Enrique echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the threats are just that and the games can be played safely.
