Ghana’s Parliament is taking action to address the ongoing power outages, known as “dumsor.” The Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, announced positive discussions with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) regarding solutions.
ECG acknowledged a shortage in power generation, causing the nationwide blackouts. To help Ghanaians cope, the committee urged ECG to provide a public load-shedding timetable.
Following a meeting with industry stakeholders on April 7th, Mr. Atta Akyea assured Ghanaians that the committee is committed to securing this timetable. He emphasized its importance for Ghanaians to plan their daily lives effectively.
“We’ve had productive discussions,” Mr. Atta Akyea said. “ECG recognizes the technical challenges and is working on solutions, including generation shortfalls. We, the committee, strongly believe that if outages are unavoidable, Ghanaians deserve a schedule to plan around.”
He further confirmed ECG’s commitment to releasing the timetable and the committee’s role in ensuring its timely delivery.
This development comes after the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) reported ECG to the Energy Minister for failing to provide a schedule. GRIDCo expressed concern about the risk to national grid stability due to ECG’s actions. They highlighted the potential for worsened disruptions if a plan isn’t implemented.
