Child Marriage: Xavier Sosu Petitions IGP to Arrest, Investigate and Prosecute Gborbu Wulomo

Human Rights Lawyer, activist, and Madina constituency Member of Parliament, Lawyer Francis Xavier Kojo Sosu, has urgently called upon Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Akufo Dampare to arrest, investigate, and prosecute Gborbu Wulomo, Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII.

Lawyer Sosu contends that the marriage between 63-year-old Gborbu Wulomo and 12-year-old Naa Okromo violates both local and international laws on child care and protection, constituting a criminal act.

Citing Article 28 of the 1992 Constitution, Lawyer Sosu emphasizes the necessity for children and young persons to receive special protection against physical and moral hazards. He argues that the marriage is illegal and void under the law, as individuals under 18 lack the legal capacity to enter into marriage.

Additionally, Sosu references Article 26 of the Constitution, which outlines limitations on traditions and customs. While individuals have the right to practice their culture and traditions, any practices that dehumanize or harm mental and physical well-being are expressly prohibited.

In a bid to expedite action on the matter, Lawyer Sosu has also forwarded the petition to the Head of DOVVSU, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Chairman of the Gender Committee of Parliament of Ghana, aiming to ensure the safety of Ghanaian children nationwide.
